My dad told me today that I will have more money than my peer because I have really great stocks that they invested in for me...how often do parents buy stocks for their children?

Often enough - often as part of trust funds or education funds.

I wouldn't count on having that money until you see it though. Stocks are volatile by nature - higher risk, higher reward. If your parents put all your money in something that's probably not worth anything in five years, you'll have nothing.

It is rare but you should consider yourself very lucky. I wish my Dad bought me stock when I was a kid.

My parents bought stock for my kids. BLUE CHIPS Washington Mutual Bank and GM went bankrupt*. I am a strong advocate of buying Series EE bonds. Not exciting, but guaranteed to be there, and you can pass it along when you think the child can handle the money wisely.

* they used to be great stocks
