Default are the south's problems caused by it being rural and republican policies

I think the problems (poor education systems, high poverty, etc) in the south are caused by it being rural because in rural areas there are less jobs available and the jobs that are available are low paying. Therefore the income is low for many places in the southeast. Republican policies reduce the taxes on people because they can't pay the higher rates that the rest of the country can. As a result, there is less funding for education, which in my opinion explains the poor education system in the southeast, poor transportation, police, fire and rescue, healthcare, and maintenance systems. If the southeastern United States was mainly urban/suburban, I think there would be more high paying jobs available, better education systems, and people would be much more wealthy if democrat policies were implemented slowly that helped the citizens and the region. Republican policies would only work if there was enough money that was not tax money available to fund the programs.

I find the southern part of the US to be very livable, I lived in NJ while working at a job for a few years and believe me, the south is a better place to live but it would be even better if Yankees would stop moving down here.

I don't think you can blame it on being rural. The North has along tradition of good schools in rural areas, dating back to the legislation first passed to divide up the Old northwest, which included school funding.

The South, being ruled by oligarchs, even in the early days tended to not stress public schools, believing that education was a commodity which must be purchased. A tradition which was made worse by racism, as few white politicians were willing to fund schools, if black people got to go to them.

Right now, the South is better than the North, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, you name it they are all kicking @@@. Very vibrant economies and better job markets, they are better off because of wise republican leadership. I live in a state dominated by the Democrats, Illinois, and this state is ready to fall off a cliff. The debt of this state is mind boggling, and jobs are fleeing to other states, and guess what party is in power, it is the Democratic Party, Democratic policies are harmfull as high taxes strangle an economy to death, and makes jobs flee to other areas. So your theory is totally wrong and if you want this country to be turned around you better vote for the GOP.

The south has been, from the start, treated as a colony of the north east, mined for its timber and agricultural products. Just raw materials to feed the factories of the North. With most of the opoulation, the North also controlled the house of representatives, keeping tarrifs on manufactured goods high and tarriffs on agricultural imports low.

The Civil War and Reconstruction only made a bad situation worse. And with the majority of freed slaves still living in the South, being legally prosecibed from learning to read and write before the war, and systematically excluded from education or deliberately undereducated after.. well there you are

Those could be some factors, and then there's the constant lying they listen to from Rush, Drudge, Fox and others.
