Salaries are a change to stockholders equity. Assets are things that you own, cash in hand, or money owed to you. Liabilities are debts, or funds held in escrow, that you owe to other people. Salaries are a business expense and thus part of stockholders equity. Most business income and expense accounts fall under the Equity category.
