Why not have it both ways? Stop investing in your
401k and on the side buy T bills. Another way to go
is to lower the risk by diversifying your money in
the 401k.

How long is "several years"?
The debt debacle will be over in "several years".

You need professional financial advice before you do something stupid. Do not act on your emotions.

You are suggesting investing DIRECTLY in the debtor you are afraid will default! (The U.S. government).

With interest rates on the rise, t-bills will lose value unless held to maturity. Holding to maturity means you would be locking yourself in to lower rates as rates are on the rise.

As soon as the current crisis is ended, the market will rebound.

You are doing exactly what most retail investors do..... they get scared by headlines, cash out of stocks and never know when to get back in. Usually they decide to get back in at the worst time, when the market has hit a peak.

Read some books on long term investing. You are the biggest danger to your portfolio...... not the Democrats, Republicans or the Tea Party.

I will retire in several years and am worried about the safety of my 401k given the state of our current government dysfunction. My 401k is pimarily in stock mutual funds. If the government defaults, those stocks are likely to tank. How should I re-align my 401k? Would it be safer to move those stock funds into T-bill mutual funds instead?

next time you ask you have to state if yo uare with that employer still. 401K accounts do not offer tbills and you can't close a 401K while you are working.
if you quit that job, then why do you still have the money in a 401K? most people roll this over to a brokerage account. then,,,, you can do whatever the heck youwant wit ht that money
